Introduction

The Cloud chapter in FIWARE provides a next generation Cloud solution that will be open, scalable, resilient, standardised, and secure, and will enable Future Internet applications by providing service-driven IaaS and PaaS functionalities.

You can learn more about the Cloud Chapter by reading the FIWARE Architecture and Open Specifications. Following is a description of the Technical Roadmap planned for the chapter, which will be developed through subsequent Releases of the FIWARE Platform. Please also check the Releases and Sprints numbering, with mapping to calendar dates.

Sixth Major Release

Following is a description of the major features that will be supported in the sixth major release of FIWARE. These features will be implemented by a number of FIWARE GEs implementing the Reference Architecture of the Cloud Chapter.

A high priority goal for the upcoming release cycle is better alignment with the overall FIWARE goal of supporting Docker.

Docker

  • Basic support of remote docker development, deployment, and management of the FIWARE cloud from a local docker client.
  • Swarm enhancements to support multi-tenancy for the FIWARE Container Cloud.
  • The Docker GE is moved to support mode and there will be no features added.

IaaS Resource Management

IaaS Data Center Resource Management IaaS will move into support mode and there will be no new features for IaaS. This release is composed of the Open Stack Kilo release.

Object Storage

Object Storage is Openstack Swift. It has moved to support mode and there will be no new features added.

Monitoring GE (Sextant)

The Monitoring GE (Sextant) was translated to the FIWARE Ops Tools chapter, only some maintenance activities will be driven during next releases.

PaaS Manager (Pegasus)

PaaS Manager was moved to support mode and there will be no new features.

Application Catalog (Murano)

During this release the main objective is to migrate the current GE implementation to an Horizon-based one, besides with the multi-region support:

  • Provide the functionalitiy to deploy Environments and/or Applications in multiple regions of FIWARE Lab nodes.
  • User Interface adaptation in Horizon
    • Adaptation of the OpenStack Murano UI to be compliant with the implementation of the FIWARE Horizon look&feel.
  • Functional adaptation of FIWARE Murano
    • Perform installation and configuration activities related to OpenStack Murano.
    • Adaptation of the specific FIWARE Murano functionalities to the new FIWARE Horizon portal.
    • Support bugs and issues related to the component.
    • Support FIWARE Lab nodes administrators.
    • Support FIWARE Murano users questions.

Policy Manager (Bosun)

Policy Manager was moved to support mode and there will be no new features.

Software Deployment and Configuration (Sagitta)

SDC Manager was moved to support mode and there will be no new features.

Cloud Portal

During this release the main objective is to migrate the current GE implementation to an Horizon-based one. This implies the next items:

  • UI design and implementation in Horizon
    • To be FIWARE look & feel compliant
  • Data base migration of existing users
    • Design the database migration
    • Perform the migration
    • Support for bugs and issues
    • Support for users questions
    • Support for node administrators
  • New environment deployment and configuration
  • New environment maintenance
  • Implement Identity Management GE modifications
    • to remove Cloud dependencies
    • to support Trial users auto-creation in Cloud Keystone

"Support Mode" in the table above means that the GE does not plan to add any new features, but will fix any bugs that may occur.
