Name Performance Management for SLA Monitoring Chapter Cloud, Data, Apps, IoT, I2ND
Goal Performance management is an essential element for the Future Internet. It must be implemtented at different architectural levels to guarantee for reliable and expected KPIs e.g., network, data center and component level KPIs.
Description Performance management for SLA Monitoring includes supervision of KPIs which result from the contents of the SLA agreement and which have to be met in order to fulfill the negotiated SLA.

Key components like data aggregation nodes or cloud computing resources must be monitored according to performance parameters agreed by an SLA e.g., a real time application like telecontrol is featured because a delay in the communications has similar effects than a lost. Performance management is not limited to component level scope, but must also be applied to higher level KPIs like service reliability or service respond time. Additionally, control mechanisms have to be implemented to tune performance parameters where appropriate. If performance cannot be met due to a lack of resources or if performance parameters are close to be failed these control mechanisms have to issue a warning to the SLA provider.

Rationale One example use case is switching off an electrical line that feeds an area. This is a typical MV-DAC operation from the utility control centre. It is very important that all ICT elements that provide the Telecontrol Function have batteries with a suitable autonomy in order to not be affected by these typical operations. Battery states have to be monitored in order to guarantee operation at these occasions and therefore also to guarantee battery availability. In case the battery is in an unhealthy state a warning has to be generated and communicated to the operator or SLA provider that can act accordingly in order to maintain the negotiated SLA.

Other important performance parameters must also be monitored and controlled e.g., RTD has to be monitored at a higher layer since many components (physical media, NEs, etc.) interwork with each other to not exceed a certain threshold and could therefore be subject to an SLA. Some functions like telecontrol are in need of a maximum RTD which if higher than negotiated leads to operational failures.
