The UPM researchers have a large expertise in participation in research projects at national and international level. The presence of UPM in the international R&D arena is ensured by its consistent participation in various EU schemes. As UPM participation in the 6th Framework Programme is concerned, the University has taken part in 149 European R&D projects with more than 25 M€ of funding received from the European Commission. After the first two years of duration of the 7th Framework Programme the UPM was recognized as the Spanish University with the highest number of projects approved. The UPM will contribute to FI-WARE through three different research groups:

  • The Internet Next Generation (UPM-ING) group of the Telecomunications School of UPM.
  • The Visual Telecommunication Applications (G@TV) group from the Telecommunications School of UPM.
  • The Computer Networks and Web Technologies Laboratory (CoNWeT Lab), member of the CETTICO research group and based at the UPM School of Computer Science.

These three groups are based at The technology Montegancedo Campus (CETTICO-CoNWeT), and at The Moncloa Campus (UPM-ING, G@TV). Both campuses obtained the name of Campus of International Excellence by the Ministry of Education in the 2010 call. In particular, the technology Montegancedo Campus aims at reinforcing international specialization focused on innovation in Information Technology. The intent of the UPM is that both initiatives become a living laboratory to increase the valuation of research results. This effort will make that the user can be a key piece of innovation in a close collaboration with industry.
